What Christmas Meant to Me in My Childhood

Jingle bells, jingle bells, that was our favorite song during Christmas when we were young – my sisters and I. I think Christmas was the best time of my life in my childhood days.

After closing school in November, we'd eagerly count down the days to Christmas. It was the most exciting time for us.

On the eve of Christmas, we'd prepare our new clothes and place them beside our beds for the next day's festivities. Anticipation would bubble within us as we imagined the joy the morning would bring. Christmas Eve was filled with the sweet scent of anticipation.

On Christmas day, we'd wake up at six in the morning, bursting with excitement, and start singing our lungs out. The magic of the season enveloped our small home, and we couldn't contain our joy.

After a quick breakfast and shower, we'd eagerly don our new clothes and head to church. The service on such a day was truly special – filled with hymns, prayers, and a sense of unity within the community.

After the church service, we'd head back home, indulging in the famous pilau and chapati that adorned our festive table.

Christmas was different then. To me, it was just a day to celebrate Jesus, eat to our heart's content, meet other kids in our neighborhood, take walks down the familiar streets, and create memories that would last a lifetime.

Those childhood Christmases were filled with simple joys, and looking back, I cherish the warmth and magic they brought to our home.

What Christmas Means to Me in Adulthood

Over the years, my perspective on Christmas has evolved, transforming from the exuberant anticipation of childhood to a more profound understanding of its significance in adulthood.

Christmas now holds a multifaceted meaning that extends beyond the surface-level joy of festivities.

To me, Christmas is a time to:

1. Spend Quality Time with Loved Ones

Firstly, Christmas has become a precious opportunity to spend quality time with loved ones. In the midst of our busy lives, the holiday season serves as a reminder to pause, connect, and cherish the bonds that matter most.

The joy of sharing laughter, stories, and meals with family and friends has become the true essence of the season.

2. Reflect on my Life

Secondly, Christmas has evolved into a personal journey of self-discovery. In the quiet moments between the celebrations, I find the space to reflect on my life's journey.

It's a time to assess personal growth, acknowledge achievements, and ponder on the lessons learned throughout the year. Christmas becomes a mirror, reflecting the person I've become and the person I aspire to be.

3. Set Goals for the Coming Year

Thirdly, the season prompts introspection and goal-setting. As the year draws to a close, I take the opportunity to reflect on my accomplishments and setbacks. This reflective pause allows me to set intentions for the coming year, fostering a sense of purpose and direction.

Christmas, in this sense, becomes a bridge between the past and the future, a moment to shape aspirations and delineate the path ahead.

4. Give Presents to my Loved Ones

Lastly, the act of giving presents has taken on a deeper significance. Beyond the material aspect, gift-giving becomes a gesture of thoughtfulness and consideration. Selecting meaningful presents for loved ones becomes an expression of gratitude and a way to convey the importance of their presence in my life.

Lessons to Learn on Christmas

Here are lessons you can learn from Christmas

1. Generosity and Kindness

Christmas is a poignant reminder of the power of generosity and kindness. Whether through gift-giving, charitable acts, or simple gestures of goodwill, the season encourages us to extend a helping hand to those in need, fostering a sense of compassion and community.

2. Gratitude for Relationships

Amidst the hustle and bustle, Christmas teaches us to pause and express gratitude for the relationships that enrich our lives. It's an opportunity to cherish family, friends, and the bonds that transcend material possessions, emphasizing the importance of human connection.

3. The Joy of Giving

The joy of giving often surpasses that of receiving. Christmas emphasizes the value of selfless giving, where the thoughtfulness behind a present or a heartfelt gesture holds more weight than its material worth. The act of giving becomes a source of joy and fulfillment.

4. Embracing Diversity and Inclusion

Christmas is a celebration that brings people from diverse backgrounds together. It teaches us to appreciate and respect the differences that make each individual unique. In the tapestry of holiday traditions, there's room for everyone, fostering a sense of unity amid diversity.

5. Finding Light in Darkness

The symbolism of light during Christmas – from twinkling decorations to the symbolic candle in ceremonies – teaches us to find hope and joy even in the darkest of times.

It's a reminder that, like the star that guided the wise men, there is always a source of light to guide us.

6. Forgiveness and Reconciliation

The season encourages us to mend strained relationships and embrace forgiveness. Christmas is a time for healing and reconciliation, emphasizing the importance of letting go of grudges and fostering harmony within our personal circles.

7. Mindful Reflection

Amidst the festivities, Christmas invites us to reflect on the passing year. It's an opportunity for introspection, acknowledging personal growth, and setting positive intentions for the future. This reflective pause helps cultivate mindfulness and a sense of purpose.

8. Celebrating Simplicity

Christmas teaches us that joy can be found in simplicity. It's not always about extravagant gifts or grand gestures. Sometimes, the most meaningful moments are those shared with loved ones, surrounded by the warmth of togetherness and the spirit of the season.

9. Creating Lasting Memories

The season underscores the importance of creating lasting memories. Whether through traditions, shared experiences, or quality time spent with loved ones, Christmas teaches us that the value of these moments far exceeds any material possessions.

10. Unconditional Love

At its core, Christmas epitomizes the concept of unconditional love. It's a time to express love without expecting anything in return, fostering a sense of warmth and connection that transcends the holiday season.

Final Thoughts

Christmas has transformed into a holistic experience that goes beyond the festive decorations and seasonal cheer.

It's a time to reconnect with the essence of the holiday, finding joy in both the shared moments of celebration and the quiet reflections that anchor the season in personal growth and connection.

The Truth is, You Don’t Need Closure

Cut ties and move on without glancing back… Image via Unsplash What did I do? What did I say? What could I have done differently? Is there someone else? Can we still be friends? Can we fix this? We torture ourselves with questions when a relationship ends. We want to know the answers. We want to know why. We want to make sense of what we don’t understand. Yes, closure can help. It can bridge the gap between confusion and heartbreak. It guides us to accept the loss and find the strength to look ahead. With closure, we realize there is no turning back. There are no what-ifs. No second chance. The other person has made up their mind for the reason of x, y, and z. As much as it hurts, closure can help us turn the page and start a new chapter. But what happens if you don’t get closure? What do you do when your ex won’t communicate or has abruptly ended all contact with you? Just one day, poof — they're gone.
