I always said I'd be happy if I reached a certain goal I had set. 

Maybe get a better job, move to a better house, or achieve some other milestone. 

But with time, I realized that every time I reached that goal, I wasn't any happier. 

Instead, I set yet another goal, and expectations piled up again. 

And until I hit that goal, I'd just be miserable—a shell of myself. 

While setting and achieving those goals improved my happiness, the happiness didn't last. 

So, I realized being unhappy now and believing I will be happy once I achieve my goals is an erroneous belief. 

So, why was I not happier whenever I hit my goals?

1. Unrealistic Expectations

I used to believe that achieving my goals would be the key to lasting happiness. 

Whether it was landing a dream job, buying a house, or reaching a personal milestone, I thought that each success would bring me closer to a state of perpetual joy. 

However, I soon realized that my expectations were unrealistic. I had placed so much emphasis on these achievements that I set myself up for disappointment. 

When I finally reached a goal, the happiness I felt was fleeting, overshadowed by the pressure to set new, even more ambitious goals. 

I learned that while goals are important, they should not be the sole source of my happiness.

2. Missing the Journey

Reflecting on my past goals, I realized that I had often overlooked the journey in my pursuit of the destination. 

I was so focused on reaching the end goal that I failed to appreciate the experiences, lessons, and personal growth that came from the process. 

It was as if I was running a race, fixated on the finish line, without enjoying the scenery along the way. 

Now, I make a conscious effort to slow down and savor the journey. I find joy in the small victories, the setbacks that lead to growth, and the people I meet along the way. 

This shift in perspective has brought a deeper sense of fulfillment to my life.

3. Shifting Priorities

Life is full of unexpected twists and turns, and as I've navigated through different stages of life, my priorities and values have evolved. 

Goals that once seemed paramount to my happiness no longer hold the same allure. I realized that achieving these personal goals did not bring me the fulfillment I had anticipated because they were no longer aligned with my current values and aspirations. 

This realization has taught me the importance of regularly reassessing my goals and ensuring that they are in harmony with my evolving self.

4. External Validation

I used to seek validation from others through my goals. Whether it was to prove my worth to others or to meet society's expectations, I was driven by external validation rather than intrinsic motivation. 

While achieving these goals did bring a sense of accomplishment, it was short-lived and superficial. I realized that true happiness comes from within, from pursuing goals that align with my values and passions, regardless of external validation. 

This shift in mindset has allowed me to pursue goals that truly matter to me, leading to a deeper sense of fulfillment.

5. Lack of Balance

In my pursuit of goals, I often neglected other important aspects of my life, such as relationships, health, and personal growth. 

I was so focused on achieving my goals that I failed to see the imbalance it created in my life. 

This imbalance led to feelings of dissatisfaction and unhappiness, even when I achieved my goals. 

I now understand the importance of maintaining balance in all areas of my life. I strive to set realistic goals that are not only challenging and fulfilling but also allow me to maintain a sense of harmony in my life.

6. Failure to Reflect

After achieving a goal, I would often rush to set new goals without taking the time to reflect on my accomplishments. 

This lack of reflection left me feeling unfulfilled and disconnected from my achievements. 

I now make it a priority to pause and reflect on my journey. I celebrate my successes, no matter how small, and acknowledge the progress I've made. 

This practice has helped me appreciate my achievements more deeply and has brought a greater sense of satisfaction to my life.

7. Changing Definition of Success

As I've grown and experienced new things, my definition of success has evolved. Goals that once seemed important to me no longer hold the same significance. 

This realization has led me to reassess my goals and priorities, focusing on what truly matters to me. 

I've learned to embrace change and see it as an opportunity for growth rather than a setback. 

This shift in perspective has allowed me to find happiness in the journey of self-discovery and personal growth.

8. Comparison with Others

I used to compare my achievements to those of others, constantly measuring my success against theirs. 

This habit only served to undermine my own accomplishments and left me feeling inadequate and unhappy. 

I now understand that everyone's journey is unique, and comparing myself to others is counterproductive. Instead of focusing on external benchmarks, I now celebrate my own progress and achievements. 

This shift in mindset has allowed me to find joy in my own accomplishments and has brought a greater sense of fulfillment to my life.

9. Lack of Connection

Achieving goals that were not deeply connected to my values and passions left me feeling empty and unfulfilled. 

I realized that true happiness comes from pursuing goals that align with my core values and passions, as they provide a sense of purpose and meaning in life

This realization has inspired me to set goals that are meaningful to me, rather than chasing after superficial achievements. As a result, I've found a deeper sense of fulfillment and contentment in my life.

1. Positive Relationships

Building positive relationships is crucial for happiness. You thrive when surrounded by people who uplift and support you.

Family bonds offer a sense of belonging and security. Community connections create a network of support and a sense of belonging. 

These relationships provide emotional support during tough times and amplify joy during celebrations. 

Investing time and effort in nurturing these relationships is key to maintaining their strength and positivity.


2. Purpose and Meaning

Finding purpose and meaning in your life is deeply fulfilling. Engaging in activities that align with your values and passions gives your life direction and significance. 

It could be pursuing a career that resonates with your values, volunteering for a cause you believe in, or simply spending time on hobbies that bring you joy. 

When you feel your life has purpose, you're more motivated, resilient, and satisfied. This sense of purpose can also enhance your overall well-being and mental health, leading to a more fulfilling life.

3. Gratitude

Cultivating gratitude is a powerful way to boost happiness. 

It involves acknowledging and appreciating the positive aspects of your life, no matter how small. 

When you focus on what you have rather than what you lack, you can shift your perspective and enhance your overall happiness. 

Practicing gratitude can:

  • Improve your mood

  • Increase feelings of satisfaction and well-being

  • Strengthen your relationships and help you cope with life's challenges.

Therefore, incorporating gratitude into your daily routine, such as through journaling or expressing thanks to others, can have lasting benefits for your happiness and overall outlook on life.

4. Practice Mindfulness

Being mindful involves being fully present in the moment, without judgment. 

It's about paying attention to your thoughts, feelings, and surroundings with openness and curiosity. 

Mindfulness can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, while enhancing overall well-being and happiness. 

By practicing mindfulness, you can learn to appreciate the simple pleasures in life, manage difficult emotions more effectively, and improve your relationships with others. 

Incorporating mindfulness into your daily routine, such as through meditation or mindful breathing exercises, can help you cultivate a greater sense of peace and contentment in your life.

5. Health and Wellness

Taking care of your physical and mental health is essential for happiness.

Eating a nutritious diet provides your body with the necessary nutrients to function optimally, while sleep is crucial for rest and rejuvenation. Prioritizing your health and well-being can lead to a happier, more fulfilling life.

Pursuing personal growth is key to happiness. 

Setting goals that challenge you and push you out of your comfort zone can lead to a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment. 

Whether it's learning a new skill, pursuing a hobby, or overcoming a fear, personal growth helps you realize your full potential and leads to a more meaningful life. 

Additionally, personal growth can improve your self-esteem and confidence, enhance your relationships with others, and increase your overall sense of well-being.

7. Acts of Kindness

Performing acts of kindness not only benefits others but also boosts your own happiness. 

Helping others can create a sense of connection and purpose, leading to increased feelings of joy and fulfillment. 

Acts of kindness can be as simple as:

  • Offering a listening ear to a friend in need

  • Volunteering your time for a charitable cause

  • Performing random acts of kindness for strangers. 

These acts not only make the world a better place but also contribute to your own sense of well-being and happiness. 

By incorporating kindness into your daily life, you can experience greater happiness and fulfillment.

8. Work-Life Balance

Achieving a healthy work-life balance is essential for happiness. 

Balancing the demands of work with personal time and leisure activities helps prevent burnout and promotes overall well-being. 

When you prioritize time for relaxation, hobbies, and socializing, you can recharge and feel more satisfied with your life. 

Striking a balance between work and personal life allows you to be more present and engaged in both areas, leading to greater overall happiness and fulfillment. 

Final Thoughts

I've come to realize that while achieving goals can bring a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction, true happiness comes from within. 

It comes from living a life that is aligned with your values, passions, and aspirations. But remember, happiness is different for everyone, and what brings joy to one person may not have the same effect on another. 

Plus, happiness is not a destination to be reached, but a journey to be embraced, and I'm grateful for the lessons I've learned along the way.
